AMC Showplace Niles

The Showplace 12 at Golf Mill opened on November 17, 2006 in the Golf Mill Shopping Center in Niles. Unlike the old Golf Mill Theater (which was located on the east side of the mall facing Millwaukee Avenue), this theater is located on the west side of the mall facing Greenwood Avenue.

The theater contains stadium seating and luxurious high back rocker-style seats with flip-up armrests.

Two of the screens are known as the “big units”. They have 500 seats in each auditorium (similar to the Cinemark Melrose Park’s theater #5 and #6) to have the biggest presentation.

It was taken over by the AMC chain in July 2010 and renamed AMC Showplace Niles 12.

Passed it yesterday. Looks nice from the outside anyway.

I’ll be checking out the new Showplace at Galewood tomorrow. They’re showing movies for free before noon. I’ll give everybody a report when I get back.

Slated to close - too bad as this was a nice theater with traditional seats, big screens, no projection problems. https://www.journal-topics.com/articles/final-curtain-coming-for-amc-niles-12-theaters/

Jesus. Only open sixteen years? Doesn’t seem like much for such a large capital investment. But then again Golf Mill looked like it was on life support last time I was through there.

It’s a shame we’re going to be losing this screen. It seemed like a pretty decent theater. I only went to see two movies there, both in IMAX: “Sully” and the IMAX presentation of “Marvel’s Inhumans,” where I experienced the digital equivalent of the film breaking in the projector.

Somehow the digital stream got corrupted and it eventually locked things up about five minutes into “Inhumans.” I think they finally fixed for showings the next day, but they might have cancelled all other showings after mine until they could fix the problem. I really miss the days when all you had to do was splice the print together and get it running again in ten minutes or so…
