Ashland Theatre

The Schine’s Ashland Theatre opened on March 27, 1942 with Henry Fonda and Gene Tierney in “Rings on Her Fingers”. Seating was provided for 1,250 in the orchestra and 250 in the balcony. The 1950 edition of Film Daily Yearbook gives the Ashland Theatre an address of 205 Center Street, Ashland, OH (could have been re-numbering over the years?).

In 1976 it was tripled, with seating provided for 600, 200 in each auditorium.

It was closed on January 20, 2011. Following six years sitting vacant, a local organisation the Ashland Schine Theatre Organisation took it over in 2017, with plans to renovated the building. Architect Aaron J. Dearth of architectural firm Simonson Construction Services Inc. were selected to carry out the renovations, which include the latest recliners seats located in a 264-seat auditorium on the ground floor and two 50-seat auditoriums upstairs. The auditorium can be used as a single auditorium orchestra and balcony for live performances, or a three screen cinema. Renamed the Ashland Theatre, it reopened on May 5, 2023 screening movies and also hosting concerts, theatrical productions, community meetings and private events.

They are hoping to open in Summer 2022. In July of 2022, Chris Skinner, who had been the executive director of The Midland Theatre in Newark, Ohio for less than a year has been hired away to oversee the operation of this restored venue.

It has been the stated goal to have the theatre open every day. They also want the theatre to be an asset to everyone in the community. One of the goals to to make movies available to those people who have not been able to afford to go to a movie for many years.

It has been announced that the opening has been delayed. They hope to open in time for the Christmas holidays in 2022. Among the reasons cited was the shortage of microchips which has delayed the acquisition and installation of a new digital projection system.
