Isla Theatre

The Tiffany Theatre opened in 1913, located on Tiffany Street near Westchester Avenue and could seat about 600. The Tiffany Theatre closed in the 1940’s. It was taken over by Harris Theatrical Enterprises in 1944 and was renamed Isla Theatre. It was still open in 1957. It later housed a furniture store for many years. By February 2016 it was in use as a lumber yard.

I have the Tiffany Theatre still listed in the 1957 edition of Film Daily Yearbook but without a seating capacity given, which usually indicates a recent closure.

Here are a couple of photographs I took of the building in in June 2005:

This was showing Spanish language films as the ISLA theatre in 1944.

I inquired about renting this property and I was informed on Feb 15, 2016 that the property now houses a lumber yard. Too bad as I was really interested in it’s space & history. Anyone have any more historical info?

Colin Powell, the American statesman, diplomat, and four-star general who died recently at age 84, grew up in the South Bronx, and often reminisced about Saturday double-features at the Tiffany. The theatre was just a short walk from the apartment where his family lived for most of his boyhood, according to an article in The New York Times of October 24th, 2021.

The theater entrance appears to have been on the corner of Westchester ave and Tiffany street. It wasn’t at the “Furniture Store” entrance.

Interesting that Colin Luther Powell, born on April 5, 1937, was reared in the ethnically mixed Hunts Point section of the South Bronx.

The young Mr. Powell graduated from Morris High School in the Bronx. By his own account, he was a mediocre student, carrying a C average at the City College of New York as a geology major.

“I’m sure Colin visted this theater as a youth living in the neighborhood” Thank you Comfortably Cool for alerting us to this fact.
